Following a competition arranged by the Staffordshire initiative, Different by Design, we were appointed by Newcastle Borough Council to design a new infrastructure for the town’s 800 year-old daily market. Intended to create a focal point on the High Street both during and outside of trading hours, the concept also aimed to give better all-weather protection to the traders and customers.
The scheme for around 70 pitches was developed in conjunction with a landscaping scheme by local architects Christopher Taylor Design. Each pitch has a robust steel table that can be folded and locked at night, and a generous awning that retracts into a high level boom with lighting. The infrastructure was prototyped and trialled on site, however implementation was shelved in the current economic climate.
